Freeport offers excellent alternatives to public education in several private and parochial systems. These systems operate five elementary, four junior high and two high school programs for parents to choose from. Each school system offers a slightly different educational slant. Freeport Christian Academy is an educational ministry of the Freeport Baptist Church. It serves some 50 students in grades K-12. It offers the School of Tomorrow curriculum, which allows for the total individualization of the curriculum to the ability level of each student. The school emphasizes academic excellence built on a foundation of God's Word and Christian character training. The mission of the Freeport Catholic School system is to provide an environment in which spiritual, intellectual and physical excellence can be nurtured. The system offers a curriculum designed to foster Christian formation, and to cultivate the unique talents of the individual while enabling student development of strong study habits and self-discipline. The Freeport Catholic School system has a population of over 550 students and is recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education. The system is an accredited member of North Central Association of Colleges and High Schools, and the National Catholic Education Association. It was a 1991 recipient of the National Boards of Education highest award for outstanding contributions to Catholic education, and in 1995 received Illinois State recognition as a fully certified Illinois Junior-Senior High School. The Freeport Catholic Schools provide a complete, faith-centered preschool through grade twelve academic program. The preschool program at St. Thomas Aquinas Church offers educational activities for children three to five years of age. Freeport Catholic Elementary School operates a kindergarten through sixth grade program. The curriculum, which includes the Open Court Reading program, is broad based and focuses on fundamentals. An extended care program offers supervision for students kindergarten through sixth grade, both before and after regular school hours. Aquin Catholic Junior/Senior High School has over 200 students enrolled in seventh through twelfth grade. Its college prep curriculum emphasizes communication skills, math, science and social studies. Technology is used to enhance the curriculum. Daily religion classes help to instill Christian values in students. Ninety-seven percent of graduates go on to some form of higher education. The school encourages participation in a wide range of extracurricular activities including student council, yearbook, National Honor Society, and Academic Team. Most students belong to the Rotary-sponsored Interact Service Club, which implements frequent and ongoing service projects throughout the community. Freeport Immanuel Lutheran is a Christian school located on the western edge of the city of Freeport and serves children from age three through eighth grade. The school serves children from diverse backgrounds; though it is operated by Immanuel Lutheran Church, most of the children come from other congregations. Immanuel School was established in 1877 and is a secure, Christian environment. The curriculum of the school is designed to help children grow intellectually, socially, physically, morally, and spiritually. The National Lutheran School Association has accredited Immanuel, and the State of Illinois recognizes Immanuel. Teachers are state certified. The upper grade teachers are subject matter specialists and the sixth and eighth grade classes are departmentalized. Lower grade children have self-contained classes. Music, physical education, computer, and art specialists supplement academic instruction. Extracurricular activities include a year-round interscholastic sports program, scouting, and musical experiences. Families that desire the extra help are offered daily extended care, summer "latchkey," and day care for three, four, and five year-olds. Open Bible Nursery and Learning Center started as a day-care center in 1970 and through the years added pre-kindergarten training, kindergarten, and latchkey, as well as "summer fun" up through third grade. At the request of working parents, first grade was added in 1998. The children are provided child care, education and food service at one cost. It is planned to add up to fourth grade as the need arises. The A-Beka Book curriculum is taught by Illinois-certified teachers, giving a solid foundation for the early learning years. Tri-County Christian School is an independent interdenominational pre-kindergarten-8th grade school that serves some 200 students on its two Freeport campuses. TCC's traditional curriculum includes a proven K-3 phonics-based reading program and a strong emphasis on traditional values and character training, public speaking, creative writing, world geography/cultures, and computer technology. As an active member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) TCCS students enjoy numerous opportunities to participate in spelling bees, speech meets, writing contests, math olympics, basketball teams, music festivals, art contests, etc. A resource room is operated to assist struggling students. All TCC's teachers are state certified. The school also operates a latchkey child care program for grades 1-5.
